Personal Broadcasting Top
You too can become involved in the service, by sending your video contribution to OPENSKY™, who will uplink it to the satellite for others to receive. Users can also create their own restricted user groups if they so wish, enabling you to create your own community.

2. What does 'Open' mean? Top
The word 'Open' indicates that the platform is open to the common standards (e.g. DVB/IP, DVB/RCS, TCP/IP), and accepts contribution from a great number of external partners. Each partner can use OPENSKY™ technology to deliver multimedia services to their users.

3. What is Eutelsat? Top
Eutelsat is one of the world leaders of satellite communications. For more information, visit the official site at www.eutelsat.com

4. What do I need to receive OPENSKY™ services?
Top
In order to receive OPENSKY™ services, you need a PC, a sufficiently large diameter dish (normally 60-90 cm) pointed to satellite W3 at 7 degrees Eas or Atlantic Bird 1 at 12.5 West and any type of standard DVB adapter plugged to your computer.

5. Do I need a very powerful PC?
Top
Having a powerful computer is not a requisite. However most multimedia applications (video streaming, push reception) work better with a powerful processor and a lot of free disk space. We recommend, as a rule of thumb at least a Pentium III processor, running at 500MHz or higher; 128MB RAM or more and a hard disk drive with at least 1 GB of free space.

6. Why do I have to use a dual feed?
Top
If you want to receive 2 satellites at the same time with a fixed antenna, you need 2 LNBs: one for each satellite. For instance, one LNB may point to 7° East (W3) and a second one to another satellite if you want to receive other channels (e.g., TV channels on Hotbird at 13° East). You can also use a single motorized antenna.

7. Is it possible to receive e-mail off-line?
Top
Off-line email notification is one of many OPENSKY™ features. The notification is made of the mail’s sender, recipient, date, subject and the beginning of the body. Then you can decide to go read this mail online.

8. Is it true than I can use Hotbird 5 on 13 degrees East for OPENSKY™ ?
Top
The OPENSKY™ services are not available on Hotbird satellites. However, with a dual LNB, you may receive both OPENSKY™ and Hotbird services (digital television).

9. If I use OPENSKY™ services, what would my transfer rates be? Top
The speed of your Internet connection depends on the type of OPENSKY™ subscription you have and there is an overall maximum speed of 2Mbps:

Basic Subscription:

  • The first 300MB per month at 512kbps guaranteed rate (up to 2Mbps)
  • Additional Mbytes in best effort mode
Club subscription:
  • The first 800MB per month at 512kbps guaranteed rate (up to 2Mbps)
  • Additional Mbytes in best effort mode
SME/SOHO Subscription:
  • The first 2GB per month at 512kbps guaranteed rate (up to 2Mbps)
  • Additional Mbytes in best effort mode

10. I have a LAN, is the quota available for the entire network? Top
The quota is for each registered DVB adapter. If you have installed a network connected to the computer where the DVB adapter is installed, this is transparent for OPENSKY™.

11. Can I use your system with the ADSL / CABLE / LAN? Top
You can use ADSL or cable with OPENSKY™ but you need to have a public IP-address.

12. Can I use OPENSKY™ with my current ISP? Top
You can use OPENSKY™ with your ISP. In fact, you will use your ISP to contact our proxy but all the data that you requested will be received through your DVB adapter.

13. Should I connect through a particular ISP?
Top
We don't have a private dial-up provider so you must keep your ISP.

14. I am behind an ISDN router. Can I use your system? Top
You can use OPENSKY™ behind an ISDN router but you need to have a public IP-address.

15. Why do I need to connect to my ISP? Top
Your parabolic dish is able to receive but not to send data to the satellite. When you browse the internet, you have to send information (i.e. the URL you are requesting). Even while downloading a file, the TCP/IP protocol requires that your computer send "acknowledgements". Anyway, you need a return channel, and the simplest return channel is the telephone connection with your ISP.

16. I have many ISP accounts... which one to use? Top
Any ISP is equally good in principle. However, you might find that some ISPs have a better connection towards our servers. This means that your requested acknowledgements can reach us faster. You have to experiment to see if an ISP offers a better connectivity than another.

17. I have a Telemann, Technisat, Technotrend, Hauppauge, Siemens, Pentamedia, etc. DVB adapter. Is it compatible? Top
As rule of thumb, all DVB-IP compliant adapters will work with the OPENSKY™ Services.

18. Can I use a USB DVB box instead of a DVB PCI card?
Top
Yes, you can use a USB box instead of a DVB PCI card. They both work equally and it is up to you to choose (USB boxes are more convenient for notebooks of course).

19. Do you sell DVB adapters?
Top
We are not selling DVB adapters. We advise you to contact your local OPENSKY™ Service Provider or buy a DVB-IP adapter of the brand Telemann, Broadlogic, Technisat, Technotrend, Hauppauge, Siemens or Pentamedia. You can buy a DVB adapter on internet or ask your computer reseller for more details.

20. How much does a DVB adapter cost? Top
The price of a standard DVB IP adapter ranges from 70 Euro to 250 Euro.

21. How can I subscribe to the OPENSKY™ Services?
Top
To subscribe to the OPENSKY™ Services, contact your local OPENSKY™ service provider (go to Find your Reseller).
